Another male jaguar was caught at Heathburn Village, East Bank Berbice yesterday

ANOTHER jaguar, Guyana’s national animal, has been captured in the Ancient County of Berbice. This one, a male, was captured yesterday by cattle and crops farmer Bryan Durant of Pepper Street in Heathburn Village in Region Six.

Durant described the animal as a ‘pest’ that had repeatedly slaughtered his domesticated birds, biting off their heads and removing them from his farm. He told the Guyana Chronicle that he was experiencing great loss in his poultry stocks.

Durant said that after the animal, which preyed at nights, had been spotted, he set up a trap to capture it. The trap, a four-foot contraption made of mesh and divided into two compartments, was secured, and three domesticated birds were used as bait. However, to protect the birds, the walls of their compartment were lined with a smaller gauge of mesh, preventing contact with the predator’s paws. The trap was taken to where the livestock was housed, several yards from the farmer’s home; and at about 02:00hrs, some five hours later, the feline predator was captured.

The animal, weighing approximately eighty pounds, was about four or five feet in length, tail included, and was transported to the New Amsterdam township, several miles away from where it was caught. It was subsequently taken to the Zoological Park in Georgetown.

This is the second jaguar to be caught in East Berbice over the last four days. Last Monday, a male jaguar was fatally shot after it had initially been seen crouching in an inter-lot drain which divides Harkman’s Lane from Pilot Street in the New Amsterdam township.

It was just before 09:00hrs when that ‘beast’ was spotted, and its presence brought the citizenry out in their numbers. Some were naturally fearful, while others were just curious.

Persons used their mobile phones to contact the police and other personnel; but, moments later, Businessman Errol Azar, a licensed firearm owner, arrived on the scene armed with his shotgun. He discharged two shots at the jaguar, and the animal, weighing more than 100 pounds, lay motionless on the street.

Residents and observers, armed with their mobile devices, sought opportunity to have ‘selfies’ with the lifeless animal.

Residents praised the efforts of Azar, while noting that there are many school children in the community, and it would have been heartbreaking if one had been attacked and mauled by the animal.

While no one reported how the animal managed to get into the township of New Amsterdam, it is believed that the jaguar had probably been a pet which may have escaped from its owner’s confinement.

In 2010, a jaguar had been spotted on a ‘paste tree’ at Lot 38 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, and was subsequently killed; while, in 2008, an ocelot was captured at Maratraite, East Bank Berbice and was taken to the National Zoo.

A MALE Jaguar  was on Monday fatally shot, after  it was initially seen crouched in an interlocked drain which divides Harkman’s Lane and Pilot Streets, in the New Amsterdam township. It was just before 09:00hrs when the animal was spotted. Its presence  brought citizens out in their  numbers, some fearful, others just curious.

Persons were seen using their mobile phones in an effort to contact the police and other personnel. However, moments later, a  businessman who happens to be a licensed firearm holder, arrived on the scene armed with his shotgun.

As he aimed at the animal, two shots were heard to ring out, and the animal, weighing over 100 pounds, lay motionless on the street.

Residents and observers armed with their mobile devices sought the opportunity to have “selfies” with the lifeless animal.

Residents praised the efforts of businessman, Errol Azar, while noting that there are many school-aged children in the community, and it would have been heartbreaking if one had been attacked and mauled by the animal.

Se entregó hombre que cazó jaguar en Chocó - Colombia

Autoridades lo buscaban luego de que el sujeto publicara en Facebook fotos del animal muerto.

Pedro Luis Gutiérrez Ruiz, la persona que presuntamente cazó un jaguar en las selvas del Chocó, se entregó a las autoridades este jueves en la tarde.

Así lo confirmó el Gobierno, a través del Ministerio de Ambiente, que este miércoles ordenó a las autoridades ambientales iniciar una investigación, la cual en pocas horas dio con la identidad de la persona, habitante de Bahía Solano (Chocó). Gutiérrez publicó en Facebook las imágenes del animal y escribió en su perfil el mensaje: “el puede ser muy bravo pero yo soy mas bravo q el jajaja (sic)”.

En los comentarios de las imágenes, algunas personas con sus mismos apellidos lo felicitaban o criticaban por haber logrado la supuesta cacería del animal. (Lea también: En Chocó investigan la muerte de un jaguar)

“Cuidado te muerde el tigre”. “Que belleza.... Pero q pecado a la mismaaa ves”. “Es una de las Especies en vía de extinción”. “Ae te estaba comiendo las vacas”. “Pedro manda un colmillo ja (sic)”.

“Desafortunadamente los jaguares han sido desplazados por la ganadería, por eso han tenido que migrar y buscar alimentos en otro sitio. Esta situación se debe a una falta de atención del Ministerio de Ambiente que no reglamenta la ganadería extensiva”, dijo Juan Guillermo Páramo, director de AnimaNaturalis Colombia, organización que se encarga de la defensa de los animales.

En Chocó investigan la muerte de un jaguar

El Ministerio de Ambiente informó este miércoles que en Chocó se centran las investigaciones sobre la presunta cacería de un jaguar, especie en vía de extinción, cuyas fotos fueron publicadas en internet por Pedro Luis Gutiérrez Ruiz y que generaron un fuerte rechazo.

El ministro de Ambiente, Gabriel Vallejo, señaló que desde la entidad ya se adelantan las investigaciones del caso y que “el sistema nacional ambiental se mueve para encontrar al infractor que terminó con la vida del jaguar”.

Por ahora, las autoridades informaron que Ruiz vive en el municipio de Bahía Solano, en la costa pacífica chocoana.

La Coorporación Autónoma del Chocó (Codechocó) interpondrá una denuncia contra Ruiz ante la Fiscalía Seccional de Quibdó, y con su equipo técnico estudiará el caso a profundidad para abrir un proceso sancionatorio.

Con esto, informó el Ministerio, la Autoridad Ambiental podrá proceder, en compañía de la fuerza pública, a establecer la necesidad de imponer medidas preventivas al infractor, por "cacería ilegal".

El hecho causó revuelo este miércoles en las redes sociales. EL TIEMPO pudo también acceder a las fotos y los comentarios de los amigos de Ruiz en su cuenta de Facebook, que fue cerrada horas después de la avalancha de críticas y comentarios.

En los comentarios de las imágenes, algunas personas con sus mismos apellidos lo felicitaban o criticaban por haber logrado la supuesta cacería del animal.

Estos fueron los comentarios en su muro de Facebook, donde él mismo publicó las fotos con el título “el puede ser muy bravo pero yo soy mas bravo q el jajaja (sic)”.

Ciudadanos y ambientalistas pidieron a las autoridades que se investigue si las fotos son reales y si ocurrieron en Colombia, pues este felino está en peligro de extinción.

“Desafortunadamente los jaguares han sido desplazados por la ganadería, por eso han tenido que migrar y buscar alimentos en otro sitio. Esta situación se debe a una falta de atención del Ministerio de Ambiente que no reglamenta la ganadería extensiva”, dijo Juan Guillermo Páramo, director de AnimaNaturalis Colombia, organización que se encarga de la defensa de los animales.

Explicó que en el país encuentran confirmadas seis especies nativas de felinos silvestres: el jaguar (Panthera onca), el puma (Puma concolor), el ocelote (Leopardus pardalis), el margay (Leopardus wiedii) y el yaguarundí (Puma yagouaroundi); poblaciones que son afectadas por acciones humanas, como la cacería, situación que ha llevado a que las especies se encuentren en algún riesgo de amenaza, como lo señala la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN).

De politie van het ressort Uitvlugt op het Shaw project in Paramaribo heeft daar een ondervoede jaguar aangetroffen. Het dier van ongeveer 90 centimeter lengte bevond zich in een kooi waarin het dier  nauwelijks bewegingsruimte had. De jaguar zag er heel verwaarloosd en ondervoed uit, aldus bericht de afdeling Public Relations van het Korps Suriname vanmiddag, donderdag 30 april 2015.

Aangezien het verboden is om een jaguar als huisdier te houden, werden de Paramaribo Zoo, de afdeling Natuurbeheer van het ministerie van Ruimtelijke ordening Grond- en Bosbeheer (RGB)  en het bedrijf Geo Set door de politie ingeschakeld.

De jaguar werd verdoofd door de specialisten van Geo Set en vervolgens vervoerd naar de Paramaribo Zoo, waar zijn nieuw verblijf in de toekomst zal zijn.

De jaguar is een beschermde en bedreigde diersoort. De politie vermeldt niet wie de jaguar gevangen hield en of en welke actie tegen die persoon wordt ondernomen. Ook is verder niet bekend hoe de houder van het dier eraan is gekomen. Is het dier in het wild gevangen? In het wild afgeschoten? En, wat wilde de houder met de jaguar?

Zoals zo vaak het geval is in Suriname verstrekken de autoriteiten, lees de politie, te weinig informatie en laat lezers met veel vragen zitten. Hopelijk krijgt dit nieuws op een of andere manier nog een staartje.

Overigens verklaart een medewerker van de dierentuin in onderstaande nieuwsuitzending, dat de houder van het dier het als jong had gevonden met een tak op zijn rug. Hij besloot de jaguar mee te nemen naar huis. Waarom hij vervolgens het dier zo lang heeft gehouden - volgens de medewerker van de Paramaribo Zoo is de jaguar rond de zes tot zeven jaar oud - is niet duidelijk.

Tip leidt politie ressort Santo Boma naar 45-jarige Shi Z. die werd aangehouden


De politie van het ressort Santo Boma heeft gisteravond een grote hoeveelheid jaguarvlees ('Panthera onca' ofwel 'tigri' in het Surinaams) in beslag genomen, dankzij een tip vanuit de burgerij. Dit meldt de afdeling Public Relations van het Korps Politie Suriname vandaag, vrijdag 17 april 2015. De politie bericht overigens consequent over 'tijgervlees'.

De jaguar is een bedreigde en beschermde diersoort in Suriname. Zonder toestemming van de daartoe bevoegde instantie mag niet op deze dieren worden gejaagd. Het vlees werd in zakken aangetroffen in een voertuig.

Het is de politie gelukt om de 45-jarige verdachte Shi Z. aan te houden. Hij heeft verklaard dat hij het jaguarvlees voor eigen consumptie bij iemand heeft gekocht voor Srd 900.

Shi is hangende het onderzoek door de politie in verzekering gesteld, na afstemming met een lid van het Openbaar Ministerie.
Het onderzoek in deze zaak duurt voort.

A Polish lady was bestowed the enviable opportunity of bottle feeding one of the largest and perhaps most majestic felines in the world – the jaguar. The woman known only as Goska, has spent some time volunteering at Criadouro Onça Pintada in Brazil and has mixed with a number of exotic animals while there.

Among them was one-year-old rescued jaguar, Perseu who was captured on video being bottle-fed by the Polish volunteer, while at the Jaguar Breeding Project. Standing in a doorway, Goska holds a bottle for the large feline, who drinks from it with great enthusiasm.

The volunteer holds the jaguar around the neck and gives it cuddles as it sucks the contents from the bottle before seamlessly moving onto another one. Later in the video, Goska is recorded in another location feeding the jaguar – she leans in and gives it a kiss on the head on this occasion.

Goska said: ‘During my volunteer at Criadouro Onca Pintada, Jaguar Breeding Project in Brazil I had the amazing opportunity to bottle feed one-year-old jaguar, Perseu. ‘I also played, cuddled and kissed him. With time he became my good friend.’The Jaguar Breeding Project is run by the Association for the Research and Conservation of the Wildlife and participates in the preservation and perpetuation of Brazilian wildlife, fauna and flora.
